RHEUMATOID FACTOR

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
RFs are a heterogeneous group of autoantibodies directed against the F region of IgG molecules. RF and IgG form immunocomplexes, which are part of the disease process of various rheumatological diseases. RF is often determined in patients suspected in rheumatoid arthritis. It has relatively little use there, as positive results can be due to other causes, and negative results do not rule out the disease. The higher the levels of RF the higher the possibility of a more destructive articular disease. There is a high rate of false positives due to other causes. These are: chronic hepatitis, any chronic viral infection, leukaemia, dermatomyositis, infectious mononucleosis, scleroderma and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Their presence has been associated with more severe disease, vasculitis, and systemic symptoms.
