CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Antibodies consist of γ-globulin proteins, and are called immunoglobulins. Immunoglobulin A (IgA)
represents about 15% of immunoglobulins in serum and is mostly found in secretions of the gastrointestinal track, saliva, and tears. Increased IgA levels are observed in cirrhosis, rheumatic fever, inflammations of the intestines, alcoholism, chronic infections, carcinoma—specifically of the gastrointestinal and hepatobilial track.
