a2 MACROGLOBULIN

Back

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
α2-macroglobulin (α2M) is a glycoprotein which can act as a protease inhibitor protecting tissues from degeneration. Increased α2M quantities in serum appear in cases of liver cirrhoses, nephritic syndrome, diabetes and severe burns. The relationship between α2M and specific prostatic antigen is tested for prostate cancer diagnosis. Genetic mutation of α2M has been associated with the Alzheimer’s disease.
