5 NUCLEOTIDASE

Back

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
5’-NU levels increase in parallel to those of alkaline phosphatase in hepatobiliary diseases but are not significantly increased in bone diseases. 5’-NU is a better test for secondary liver tumors and lymphomas than alkaline phosphatase. Values are high in infants, decrease in adolescence and increase again in the elderly. Increased levels are also seen in hepatobiliary disease with intra- or extra- hepatic biliary obstruction, hepatic carcinoma, early biliary cirrhosis, pregnancy (third trimester).
